What is gluten free all about?

For most people, we only watch what eat because we want a healthy lifestyle. We watch our fats, our carbs, and our sugars… Sometimes we get too obsessed with this and end up feeling bad about eating anything. But for people that suffer from coeliac disease, it’s very important to make sure that all their food is free of gluten.

Fat free, sugar free, caffeine free and now gluten free?

So what is gluten and why do we have to have diets because of this? It is a wheat protein that celiac disease sufferers can not handle, it’s found in barley, malts and rye. But it’s not just actual ingredients that cause problems. It’s also in a lot of additives like stabilizers, thickening agents and flavorings. This creates an absolute minefield as you have to be extremely careful what you are eating, because even if you have a meal, there could be gluten in your drink, and even if you buy cakes, there could be gluten in the flavourings of the cream you have with it.

For people who can’t tolerate gluten, it can be extremely miserable. From vomiting when eating their meal to diarrhea, there is a whole range of issues. Irritable bowls and stomach aches can make meal times agony, and some people don’t even realise they have it.

So finding gluten free foods is a very difficult task for a celiac sufferer. There are plenty of foods directories and cakes and yummy things as well. But not many people even understand what gluten really is, let alone helping them to learn how to eat a well balanced diet without gluten.

A gluten-free diet is the only medically accepted treatment for celiac disease and wheat allergies. Many types of alcoholic drinks are considered to be free, but a lot of whiskeys comes from ingredients that have grains that contain gluten.

Gluten free bread is actually a great invention and there are plenty of great gluten free meals out there.

If you have a sweet tooth there are plenty of gluten free cakes as well! There is no reason for a celiac sufferers to miss out anymore. It is important that we don’t stop eating what we like because of this situation. We just have to be smart about it!
