Is it possible to develop celiac disease?

chichi Asked: Is it possible to develop celiac disease?

When I was a kid I had a lot of stomach problems. They thought it was a lactose intolerance but then it went away. I am 24 and lately I have not been feeling myself (racing heart, difficulty breathing, headaches, difficulty focusing). It has probably been about 3 months that I’ve been feeling this, but I’ve just been attributing it to stress. I have a very stressful job so I thought that it had just finally caught up with me but lately it seems like I feel worse after I eat. I was considering trying a gluten free diet for a couple weeks to see how I feel, but was wondering, is it even possible to develop now?

Yes you can develop it at any age. You are right on track by trying a gluten free diet for a couple of weeks. If you start to feel better then you know you likely have it. A celiac attack can last for a couple of days which would explain why you feel sick all the time.

Usually it starts when you’re little, but it could be possible. I wouldn’t go jumping to conclusions until you look into it more though. It may just be adult anxiety which can make your stomach flip as well. Anxiety seems to fit your symptoms a bit better, but a trip to the doc and a trial period without gluten is worth a shot at this point
